Abstract Coulson
I will briefly review the literature on the neural substrate of metaphor comprehension, focussing on the intriguing suggestion that novel metaphor is the province of the right cerebral hemisphere while conventional metaphor is governed by the left. I will discuss what conceptual integration, or blending, theory says about the difference between novel and conventional metaphors, and present data from my laboratory that bear on these issues.
